Huckabee's win in West Virginia is, I believe, the end of Mitt Romney's hopes. Naturally it's early, and just one state, at a convention set-up no less. But the fact that McCain and Huckabee *supporters* are linking together spells trouble for Romney.
The conventional wisdom has been that Huckabee takes votes from Romney. Which may have been true. We'll see as it continues!
The Republicans are locked in a tight race in Georgia. More evidence that Huckabee could be serving as the Primary version of Ross Perot.
5% of Montana is reporting with Mitt ahead. Too early to predict anything, but a hint of good news for Mitt.
GOBAMA!
McCain is looking strong by taking New Jersey and Connecticut. This looks like trouble for Romney and talk-radio-hatred.
Huckabee seems to be pulling ahead in Georgia. Interesting that McCain's plan to use Huckabee's voters has an outside chance of backfiring.
Huckabee is using a southern strategy. However, this time, it's at least a little more respectable and decent than the ones used by Nixon, Reagan, Bushes, etc.
No surprise that Huckabee takes Arkansas.
Has anyone noticed that McCain keeps winning in states he couldn't carry in the general election?!?
I'm intrigued by Huckabee's success rate here tonight. There might be something to his argument that Mitt needs to get out of his way.
Although, it has been Southern success so far.
I keep thinking there's no way this Huckabee thing can go any further than the South...but we'll see. McCain can't win a Republican state!
McCain continues to be the favorite of Republicans who can never give him an electoral vote by taking New York.
There's a break in the results right now. However, this is not looking good for Mitt Romney at all. Huckabee took the South...not *away* from Mitt (they never belonged to him) - but he stopped them from going to Mitt.
So far Romney has *just* won Massachusetts. He's got a lot riding on California. Although, right now, the best spin against McCain is that he can only win blue states.
Mitt running away with MA and CA doesn't help him much either.
Three seconds later, McCain wins Oklahoma. :)
Republican exit polling:
10% identify as liberal. Interesting. Who are these liberals? What in blue hell are they thinking?
Polls close in Utah in 2 minutes. They shouldn't even need to take a breath before calling it for Romney.
Huckabee is currently giving a speech where he degrades Jesus by saying that Jesus is the reason he's not going to be President.
This is nothing personal...
But I personally think Mike Huckabee is a dangerous man, and I personally want him to get beat around by Mitt Romney.
But I love his wife! That Janet Huckabee could be my friend (if I didn't think she had a gun hidden in her purse)
Huckabee finished his anti-Jesus speech with a very powerful closer.
The uncalled states are leaning this way:
Romney:
North Dakota
Montana
Minnesota
McCain:
Huckabee:
Tennessee
Georgia
Missouri
Alabama
No Clue:
Colorado
California
Arizona
Alaska
Mitt's only hope to stay in this thing (seriously) is to win California.
Huckabee could be the big, surprise winner.
Mitt's giving his Super Tuesday speech. I feel bad. Mitt's not an evil, horrible guy.
It's just too bad that Romney has become the cause of the talk-radio-hate movement. At this point, a vote for Romney is a vote supporting the type of demonization politics of the Clinton/Bush years. :(
I wish Republicans didn't have so much religious discrimination in them. If they didn't, Mitt would have sewn up the nomination.
Let that be a lesson to dogmatic conservatives.
Wow. Romney's giving his "I'm a big winner, the race goes on speech" tonight, when he's only won MA and UT.
That's like me holding a big press conference at the end of the night to say "MY MOM VOTED FOR ME! I'M GOING TO BED TONIGHT!"
Romney just trashed politicians for being politicians. Apparently he's Mitt-Flopped on his previous comments that he loved that he thought his parents were honorable to be politicians.
Things are looking great for Huckabee...
Troubling for McCain...
And terrible for Mitt...
Mitt needs California right now. Also, kudos to Minnesota for picking Romney. :)
*very* early California results look horrible for Mitt. But, it's just like, eight votes...so who knows right now.
Huckabee just won Georgia ... another state showing that, perhaps, McCain's attempt to use Huckabee may have backfired.
Romney just took Colorado. We've heard nothing from Alaska, and I don't know if he has a shot there. But at this point, his only other hope is California. If he doesn't take California, the storyline will be that Huckabee has become the anti-McCain.
Correction. He's in the lead in Montana, too.
CNN keeps saying that the exit polls show Romney is fighting for the lead in California...but the results trickling in show a drastictally different picture. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that this race will tighten up soon.
Romney took Montana. I still stand firm - his only hope of the nomination is that he wins California.
If not, the narrative going forward will be whether or not Mitt Romney has been surpassed by Huckabee.
If McCain takes California, Huckabee will have the momentum.
Wierd, hey?
McCain just won California...which caps off a surprising night for him.
The press, tomorrow, will be talking about McCain-Huckabee.
Rush and the talk-radio haters are being proven to be powerless.
They also just called Missouri for McCain.
Mitt is going to have a tough, tough time to portray this as a race betwen him and McCain.
Breaking news....
Romney appears to be getting ready to drop out.
The news broke after California was called to McCain.
That's what I f'n said.
PUT ME ON MSNBC!
I'm still amazed by Huckabee today.
I'm now curious as to the delegate math, to see if Huckabee even has a chance.
Goodbye Romney.
Hate-radio-followers now need to pick a *fourth* choice. Thompson, 9iu11ani, Romney...they sure know how to pick 'em!
